Okra is our Breathe and soul
We can't help it.
We owe our success to the humble okra, Abelmoschus esculentus. With something that once started as a simple idea of merchandising with our (former) brand name in mind, turned into a life beyond our wildest dreams.
It all started with a 'lil seed of creativity, to turn okra pods into earrings. We watered that creative seed and somehow never gave up. Boy howdy has it been a ride! Rough at (most) times but it seems that we're gettin' pretty close to holdin' on for the whole eight seconds because things are lookin' pretty darn bright.
Gombo Atelier stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation. The name itself captures the essence of the brand: “Gombo,” derived from the French word for okra, symbolizes nourishment, community, and adaptability, while “Atelier,” French for studio, embodies collaboration, meticulous artistry, and bold expression. Together, these elements form a brand that celebrates the beauty of roots and the possibilities of reinvention.
We seek to transcend the boundaries of art and design by weaving cultural narratives into every piece. Drawing from Louisiana’s unique blend of African, French, Cajun, and Creole influences, the brand honors the deep connections between the land, its people, and their stories. It also embraces the unconventional and diverse paths through which individuals reclaim and celebrate their heritage— acknowledging that identity is not always linear or traditional but deeply personal and transformative. The result is wearable art that speaks to the soul, evokes memories, sparks dialogue, and creates a sense of belonging.
